California Dreaming

Big Sur is located just over 3 hours south of San Francisco and is one of the most stunning parts of California. This stretch of the coast sits on top of massive cliffs looking out onto the Pacific Ocean. The region boasts many state parks which are perfect for hiking or camping and the sealife, wildlife and natural wonder of this almost untouched part of the world will take your breath away (if the cliffs don't already).

Getting There

The drive to Big Sur is breathtaking along the jagged coast of Route 1. The road is known for its winding turns, bridges and seaside cliffs with incredible views of the Pacific. If you are heading from SFO it is an easy trip where the drive alone makes it worth it.

Incredible Hotels

The Post Ranch Inn is one of the most special and unique hotels we have ever stayed in. Everything about it from the eco chic rooms to the incredible hot tubs and stunning views make it one of the most relaxing places on earth. We had an unbelievable massage here, and spent most of our time being blown away by the breathtaking views.

Lots Of Activities

One of the best parts of Big Sur is how much there is to do. Yes the hotel was fantatisic, but we had a ton of fun checking out the local parks and visiting the beautiful beaches. The coastline is so incredibly dramatic because of the huge cliffs set against the pacific ocean.

The hikes around Big Sur are also worth checking out. At first we were a little put off when we saw the signs for bears and rattle snakes, but our fears soon subsided when we got the dramatic views that Pfeiffer State Park has to offer.

The Hotels

Not A Lot of Choice, But Some Great Choices

We only checked out two hotels while we were in Big Sur and that was beacause they both were so perfect (and a lot of research went into our choices). The town itself doesn't scream "luxury", but both of these resorts do. You can't go wrong with either of these hotels, but we would recommend Post Ranch Inn which is truly a special (and expensive!) property.

Post Ranch Inn

This magical hotel is set on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Prepare to totally relax and unplug at this amazing property. The rooms are eco chic and all have fireplaces, free mini bar and either mountain or ocean views. This is a place where you come to relax, enjoy one of their amazing cliff top infinity pools and enjoy the view. Incredible luxury awaits you and the service can't be beat. A popular spot for couples, especially honeymooners. Note: There are no TVs in your room.

Ventana Inn & Spa

A chic posh lodge located off Route 1, though not the ocean side, but still incredibly beautiful. The hotel capitalizes on it's elevated location and lush grounds to make for a special experience. Not as quirky as the Post Ranch Inn, they have TVs and not as couple oriented. Pro-Tip: Not worth splurging on ocean view rooms here because they are on the other side of the highway and ocean is in the far distance.

The Food

Delicious Options

There are a bunch of great places to eat in Big Sur and we wish we had more time to check them all out. Sierra Mar is definitely on the fancy end, but it is really a fantastic option. Nepenthe is the perfect lunch location and the Big Sur Bakery has a super low key, but delicious dinner.

Sierra Mar

"Dining on the edge of the world" is the best way to describe this beautiful and exquisite restaurant located at the Post Ranch Inn. The food is spectacular and the floor to ceiling windows looking out on the Pacific make for a unique and unforgettable experience. If you don't want to splurge for dinner, then I would highly recommend going for cocktails. The drinks were delicious and the bartender gave us binoculars so we could watch whales below.

Nepenthe

We had the most FANTASTIC lunch here, this spot is magical and the food lives up to the view! We split a heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad to start and then both had their famous Ambrosia Burger, which was maybe the best burger ever? I also had a delicious piece of key lime pie for dessert.

Big Sur Bakery

Amazing for breakfast and a great relaxed spot to have a pizza for dinner. We sat outside and loved every minute of this great location.

Must See

Hike, Swim and Spa

Big Sur is a little slice of heaven where you can still feel productive. Go for a 3 hour hike in the national parks and then come back to your hotel for a 2 hour massage.

Hike Julia Pfeiffer Park

See the waterfall and then take a beautiful (long) hike! We were a little concerned at first because of the "Watch for Bears" signs, but this is one of the most incredible hikes we have ever done.

Pfeiffer Beach

Beautiful beach with incredible rock formations.

Must Drink

The Hotel Bar

The hotel bars at both the Post Ranch Inn and the Ventana hotel are great places for pre and post dinner drinks. We would recommend the Post Ranch Inn for pre dinner drinks for the potential whale sighting opportunity. Then the Ventana has some great outdoor fireplaces which makes it perfect for a post dinner digestif.

Post Ranch Inn

Great drinks and an even better view. You can't go wrong with any of their concoctions, especially the Tequila drinks!

Ventana Inn & Spa

We came here for an after dinner drink and fell in love with the decor and cozy fireplaces. They had a great wine list and delicious cocktails
